Whilst the safety squat bar is more unusual in its design it’s incredibly versatile and offers some big benefits to those who use it. It has been known to humble even the biggest of lifters because whatever your regular barbell squat number is, you’re unlikely to hit that by using the safety squat bar.
The handle positions of this bar mean you don’t have to rotate your shoulders in such a way as when squatting with a regular barbell which is why it’s great if you have any upper body injuries. So if you suffer from shoulder, elbow or wrist pain but don’t want to miss out on a squat sessions this bar could be for you.
Once you’ve loaded up the bar with weight and unracked, you’ll notice that the bar is trying to force you forward, this is because of the camber at each end. This may make you feel slightly unstable to begin but the way to counter act any instability is to stiffen up your core muscles.
The weight will rest on the upper back area but not so on the shoulders, hence why it’s good for those with shoulder injuries. During the movement you’ll really target the posterior chain but you can even use the bar for front squats which will help you to target more of your core.
Our safety squat bar features knurling on the handles for an improved grip and dense upholstery making it extremely comfortable when the bar is resting across your upper back. The nickel plated weight horns are resistant to chipping and rusting and feature a plastic base so your plates sit flush and not against a bare weld, this prevent any plate wobble.
